As our product roadmap has evolved, so has our vision for what Misfits can become. Recently, I've been thinking about a new articulation of our mission that feels both ambitious and aligned with what we're building: to create a "Silicon Valley" for India in the digital age.
The power of Silicon Valley isn't just about the companies that emerge from it—it's about the ecosystem that makes those companies possible. It's about founders, operators, investors, and thought leaders all "having coffee at the same cafe," breathing the same air, and cross-pollinating ideas.
It's about access to early adopters, early capital, and early employees, all combined with a shared belief in the power of technology. When these elements come together, magic happens. Much of the technological change we've seen in the world over the past 20 years can be traced back to that small area in California.
In India, there's been an ongoing debate about which city deserves the title of "India's Silicon Valley." Is it Bangalore? Hyderabad? Mumbai? But this framing misses the point.
The Silicon Valley of the 1970s and 80s was built on physical proximity because that's how the world worked then. Today, we're digital natives living parallel digital lives. Remote work has become normalized for many roles, and we've grown accustomed to collaborating across distances.
So what should the Silicon Valley of our times look like? It shouldn't be defined by geography but by community and shared purpose.
Our vision is to create a digital ecosystem that brings together the key elements that made Silicon Valley successful:
When someone in our community sees a colleague reverse their diabetes through a new app, it motivates them at a deeper level than reading about it in the news. When they watch a friend build and scale a company, it inspires them to consider entrepreneurship themselves.
This inspiration is typically limited to the one company you're part of at any given time. But in our community—currently 900 people but potentially growing to thousands or more—everyone is carefully curated, exposed to startup building, and engaged in thoughtful conversations about technology and business.
Every month, new founders educate our community about different industries and technologies. We explore the world of new technology together, creating a powerful learning flywheel.
This approach is already showing results. Over the past year, we've seen 30-50 people from our community become entrepreneurs themselves. They joined while working at startups or large enterprises but have since launched their own ventures.
We're building this ecosystem piece by piece:
The ingredients that made Silicon Valley successful can be recreated in a digital-first world. By bringing together the right people, providing access to quality deals, and fostering a culture of learning and transparency, we can build an ecosystem that has a transformative impact on India's startup landscape.
This isn't just about investment returns—it's about creating a community where people learn, grow, and inspire each other to build the next generation of innovative companies. It's about democratizing access to the startup ecosystem and enabling more people to participate in the technological transformation of our economy.
As we continue building Misfits, this vision of creating a digital Silicon Valley will guide our product development, community curation, and overall strategy. We believe this approach will not only generate strong returns for our investors but also contribute to building a more vibrant, innovative startup ecosystem in India.
